MinSU's "Alay Akay" Initiative Promotes Hygiene and Manners Among Mangyan Students

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM) Program of Mindoro State University (MinSU) Bongabong Campus conducted "Alay Akay," at Upper Yunot Elementary School in Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro, December 14, 2024. The said initiative was a community outreach effort aimed at promoting health and social values among the indigenous Mangyan youth.

During "Alay Akay," MinSU faculty and students guided the Mangyan pupils on essential personal hygiene practices, such as the importance of regular bathing and handwashing. They also highlighted the value of po and opo as respectful Filipino expressions of good manners. Additionally, the youth were educated on proper waste disposal and the significance of maintaining a clean environment.

The program concluded with a feeding session and the distribution of clothes and hygiene kits to the children. These tokens of support were meant to reinforce the lessons taught and provide the children with tools to maintain personal hygiene.

This activity was part of MinSU's KAPWAA program, which stands for Kalinisan, Pag-uugali, at Wastong Asal Awareness. The KAPWAA program, launched in 2021 in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Bongabong’s Community Development Office and various non-government organizations aims to improve the quality of life for the Mangyan people by focusing on hygiene practices, positive social behavior, and environmental awareness.
