In its effort to support the well-being of students as well as its faculty and staff, Mindoro State University’s (MinSU) Guidance and Counseling Office organized a weeklong activity titled “Kapehan sa Guidance Forda Kamustahan ang mga Ferson” across MinSU Campuses . The event which was also part of the Mental Health Week celebration, aimed to provide a safe space for students, faculty, and staff to engage in meaningful conversations over a cup of coffee, fostering personal growth and raising awareness about mental health.
The week-long celebration held from November 6 - 10, 2023, which was spearheaded by Guidance Counselor III, Ms. Heidelita G. Bumohya, and Guidance Staff member Grace Nava Mendoza, was made possible with the help of the Admission Staff, Meryll Jane Ramos, and BS Tourism Management students. Together, they created an inclusive environment where everyone could relax, share, and connect. A photo booth and a “Mental Health Week Safe Space” freedom wall were also set up to encourage individuals to express their thoughts and feelings.
For a week, each morning, the team prepared essential materials—coffee, biscuits, cocoa drink, and milk—creating an inviting atmosphere that helped students unwind and enjoy the activity. The success of the event was evident in the smiles and positive feedback from the participants. Many students, especially those in their final year, shared how the event alleviated their stress and allowed them to take a moment to breathe.
“It’s so heartwarming, especially for us 4th-year students, to have a program like this,” one student remarked. “It really helped ease our worries. I’m happy we had the chance to experience it.”
Students also expressed their appreciation for the program's efforts to address mental health concerns, with one adding, “It’s great, especially when there are in-depth conversations. Some students, like me, are very positive outwardly, but inside, our mental health is not stable. I hope there are more programs like this, though we’re graduating soon. Thank you for the free Milo and bread!”
The feedback from participants highlighted the positive impact of the program, with many commenting on how it made their day better and how effective it was for those facing personal struggles. “This program is very effective, especially for young people who are going through difficult times in life,” one student shared.
The success of the event was also reflected in the survey results. When asked if the venue for the event was appropriate, 90.9% of respondents strongly agreed. Additionally, 87.9% agreed that the overall program was beneficial for attendees.
As the Mental Health Week concluded, the Guidance Office received heartfelt gratitude and appreciation from the MinSU community. The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need to create safe spaces for everyone to talk, connect, and support each other.
Mindoro State University continues to champion student well-being through initiatives like this, fostering a healthy and supportive environment for all.
